It is often said that "those who do not learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them". But if what is considered to be "history" is not accurate, then the lessons supposedly learned are not the lessons of history, and the suffering will be repeated. While you can come to the study of history with a hypothesis, you must be willing to alter or abandon that hypothesis if the accurate record proves that hypothesis to be wrong. If you are coming to "history" with a pre-conceived notion and seeking facts to confirm that notion and to attempt to force-fit the historical record to conform to your preconceived notion, then you are not seeking the truth of history, and you will not learn the lessons of history. |
The Morning Reports were daily reports filled out for each element of a unit. They are the only WWII records that exist that go down to the company level. They are an absolute gold mine of information about specific events of the company and its men. They include (1) location as of 2400, (2) personnel status changes, (3) Record of Events entries [not always present on every day], and (4) strength counts. They were filled out as of Midnight of the date of the report and then turned in the following morning.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Morning Reports are all in PDF format. So you will have to have the Adobe Reader installed on your computer. Click here for a free download. ALSO note that these tend to be large files (10MB and larger), so that they may take a bit longer to download than you are used to.
Pre-Combat Morning Reports (prior to August 1944)
The repository includes the Morning Reports for a few elements. Links to them follow. The Division sailed to England 7 June 1944.
Combat Morning Reports (August 1944 - May 1945)
7th Armored Division
The repository envisions a complete set of all the combat Morning Reports for all elements of 7th Armored Division. The reality of the difficulty of obtaining the Morning Reports leaves that vision unfulfilled -- but gradually making progress. In the following table, a blank cell indicates no Morning Reports yet, a "p" indicates a partial set of usually 2-4 days (contact me for details), and an "X" indicates a complete set for the month in a PDF file which can be seen by clicking on the "X".
