By far, the greatest number of casualties were in 38 AIB. The 10 men executed most likely were from 38 AIB, with some possibly from 33 AEB.

Company "B" (B/38) was on duty guarding Division Trains but was sent forward when A/38 and C/38 and the platoons of Headquarters Company/38 met stiff resistance in the attack on 19 Sep. Thus B/38 had fewer casualties than the other companies. On 19 Sep, no B/38 men were killed, and only 7 were lightly wounded.

A/38 had suffered signficant combat losses prior to arriving in the area of Metz. The strength jumped from 218 enlisted men on 8 Sep to 277 on 17 Sep. But once in the line west of Sillegny, they had been under constant artillery fire for several days. The Company lost 32 men as non-battle casualties on 18 Sep, as the constant shelling wore the men down. On 19 Sep, the Commanding Officer, Capt. Dan Jennings and 16 enlisted men were evacuated as non-battle casualties. So the rest of the day, the Executive Officer assumed command for the attacks on Sillegny, which was costly: 21 wounded and evacuated - as far as they knew at the end of the day when the strength count had dropped to just 207 enlisted men. As it turned out, A/38 had had 6 men killed in the 3 days prior to 19 Sep, and 6 more would be killed that day.

C/38 saw its worst day of any day of the war -- before or after -- at Gravelotte, France, on 6 Sep. They suffered more casualties trying to reach the Moselle further north over the next days. including Commanding Officer, Capt. John Mace, concussed by a German artillery shell that hit a combat command headquarters meeting. So the medics had him back west of the Moselle on 19 Sep, and the Company fought under the Executive Officer's command. From a strength of only 184 enlisted men on 7 Sep, the ranks fluctuated greatly as new replacements arrived and more were lost on 14 Sep, so that by the end of the day on 18 Sep, they had only 193. By the end of the next day, 19 Sep, they had lost 26 more men and were down to 167. When the final counts were eventually known, C/38 had 1 officer and 10 enlisted men killed on 19 Sep. So if the executed men were from the same unit -- which we do not know -- then only C/38 had that many killed.

But the letter companies were not the only elements of 38 AIB who had men killed. Here are the counts of dead by element:
