The following is from Appendix I on pages 200-201 of the book Numerical Listing of APO’s: January 1942 – November 1947, prepared by Army Postal Service and Strength Accounting Branches, AGO (Adjutant General’s Office). While the main focus for this list is World War II, the book covers the period until November 1947, so that some of the units shown here may be post-war.
Note that the book does not follow some conventions of WWII written text. In particular, the absence of the letter "n" from suffixes: the book uses "2nd" while Army practice in WWII was "2d".) Also while WWII practice was to write "XVIII Corps (Airborne)", the book simply lists the Corps as "XVIII". So the bottom line is that the textual conventions used on this web page are often NOT the textual conventions used by the Army in World War II.
